Hall H Under Review as San Diego Comic-Con Weighs Space Crisis

San Diego Comic-Con is seriously considering converting Hall H from a theater space back into exhibit floor—a move that would reshape one of pop culture's most iconic panel venues and signal just how constrained the event has become.

David Glanzer, SDCC's Chief Communications and Strategy Officer, laid out the problem plainly during a panel discussion: the convention has outgrown the San Diego Convention Center since 2010. The math is brutal. SDCC caps attendance at 135,000 annually, but the venue itself can't accommodate the demand for major panels without creating bottlenecks. Hall H, traditionally the theater space where studios debut trailers and make announcements, has become part of the overcrowding problem rather than a solution.

The proposal reflects a deeper squeeze. Revenue is tight, space is tighter, and the convention's footprint hasn't expanded to match its cultural weight. Rather than fight for more square footage within an already-maxed facility, organizers are exploring whether converting Hall H back to exhibit space—where vendors and booths operate—could ease pressure elsewhere and generate additional revenue streams.

It's not the only lever they're pulling. SDCC is also negotiating for additional space from nearby hotels and exploring expanded sponsorship deals to shore up finances and capacity. But the Hall H consideration is the most visible sign that the old model is breaking down.

What this means for the future of major studio announcements—traditionally the Hall H draw—remains unclear. If the space reverts to exhibits, those panels would need to relocate, likely to smaller venues or be consolidated. For an event built partly on the spectacle of massive reveals, that's a genuine shift.

The core issue is structural: SDCC has become a victim of its own success. It's too big for its home, too culturally significant to shrink, and too financially dependent on its current model to easily pivot. Converting Hall H is a band-aid, not a solution. But it's the band-aid they're seriously considering.
