CloverWorks is adapting The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't a Guy At All into an anime, with director Masashi Ishihama at the helm and a January 8, 2027 premiere locked in. The first trailer just dropped.

The series, based on Sumiko Arai's manga (which took the Next Manga Award in 2023), centers on a premise that does exactly what the title promises. Mariya Ise voices Mitsuki Koga, with Akari Kito as Aya Osawa. The supporting cast rounds out with Kenjiro Tsuda, Tasuku Hatanaka, Yurina Amami, Fairouz Ai, and Maiko Nomura.

The real flex here: Nirvana's Breed is the opening theme. Yes, that Nirvana. The grunge classic gets a second life as anime intro music, which is either inspired or chaotic depending on your tolerance for tonal whiplash.

The manga's premise—a gender-reveal twist baked into the title itself—has enough narrative teeth to sustain a full series, and CloverWorks' track record suggests the adaptation will land cleanly. The cast is solid, Ishihama knows how to pace character-driven stories, and an opening theme that slaps (even if it's from 1992) doesn't hurt. Mark January 8 if you're curious.
