Cyberpunk Edgerunners Brawler Game Reportedly Stalled by Funding Issues
A Cyberpunk: Edgerunners brawler game by WayForward is reportedly stalled.
CD Projekt and WayForward were developing a 2.5D brawler based on the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, but the project—codenamed "Gemini"—may have hit a wall. The game has been in development since 2025, according to reports, though funding problems appear to have derailed it.
WayForward, the studio behind the Shantae series and River City Girls, reportedly faced layoffs after losing funding for an unannounced title last year. The timing suggests Gemini could be the casualty, though neither CD Projekt nor WayForward has confirmed the project's status publicly.
The brawler would have been a logical spin-off: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the Netflix anime that launched in 2022, proved the IP could work outside the video game space. The show's stylish action and character work translated well enough that a game adaptation made sense—especially one leaning into the hand-to-hand combat that defined the series.
Meanwhile, the anime itself isn't dormant. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set to return for a second season on Netflix this fall, keeping the property in the cultural conversation even if the brawler remains shelved.
On the larger CD Projekt front, Cyberpunk 2 is actively in development with 163 people assigned to the project as of April. Keanu Reeves has also expressed interest in reprising his role as Johnny Silverhand, suggesting the studio is thinking seriously about the sequel's scope and star power.
The Gemini cancellation—if confirmed—marks another casualty in a year of studio upheaval. WayForward's loss of funding speaks to the precarious economics of game development, even for studios with proven track records. A Cyberpunk: Edgerunners brawler had real potential; whether it resurfaces elsewhere or stays buried depends on whether anyone else wants to fund it.
