The Apothecary Diaries Gets Live-Action Drama with Mana Ashida

Prime Video and Toho are bringing The Apothecary Diaries to live-action, with the drama set for exclusive global release in 2028 across over 240 countries and regions. Mana Ashida will step into the role of Maomao, the protagonist who uses her medical expertise to unravel mysteries and conspiracies within a fictional imperial court.

The adaptation is based on Natsu Hyuuga's light novel, which already found massive success through its anime series that launched in 2023 and built considerable global momentum. The shift from animation to live-action marks a significant expansion for the property, bringing the poisoner-turned-investigator into a new medium with a major streaming platform backing the production.

Ashida's casting as Maomao is the anchor here—she'll need to capture the character's sharp intellect and dry wit alongside the medical mystery-solving that defines the source material.
