Suikoden Anime Adds Cast, Reveals Opening Theme
The Suikoden anime reveals new cast, amazarashi opening theme, and early screenings.
The Suikoden anime adaptation is ramping up its rollout with fresh casting announcements and a second promotional video that finally puts a name to its opening theme. The track, titled "Kanashimi Sae Otonabite," comes from the Japanese rock band amazarashi—a choice that signals the production's commitment to matching the emotional weight of Konami's beloved Suikoden II source material.
Joining the cast are Jin Yamanoi, Miyuki Sawashiro, and Kōdai Sakai, expanding the ensemble beyond what was previously announced. The anime itself launches in October across 32 channels in Japan, but fans won't have to wait that long to see it in action. Starting August 21, the first three episodes will screen in 10 theaters nationwide, giving early adopters a theatrical preview before the broadcast premiere.
The adaptation isn't stopping at animation, either. A manga tie-in will debut in Comic Dengeki DaiohG magazine on July 27, creating a multi-format rollout that mirrors how major anime franchises typically build momentum. This layered approach suggests the production team is treating Suikoden as a significant tentpole project rather than a standard seasonal release.
The choice to adapt Suikoden II specifically makes sense—it's widely considered the series' peak, with a sprawling narrative and massive cast that's both a blessing and a curse for anime adaptation. How the production condenses that scope into a television format remains to be seen, but the involvement of amazarashi on the opening theme suggests the creators are aiming for something that captures the game's dramatic, character-driven storytelling rather than just translating gameplay to screen.
