Melty Blood Gets a Sequel: Twi-Lumina Arrives Early 2027
Melty Blood: Twi-Lumina, an evolved fighting game, is set for an early 2027 release.
Fighting game fans are getting their next major update sooner than expected. Aniplex and French Bread have announced Melty Blood: Twi-Lumina, an evolved version of the 2021 fighter Melty Blood: Type Lumina, arriving in early 2027 across a sprawling platform lineup.
The new iteration lands on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam—a significant breadth of accessibility for a fighting game. The expansion boasts an improved combat system, fresh playable characters, and a story penned by Kinoko Nasu, the creator behind the Tsukihime visual novel universe that grounds the entire Melty Blood franchise.
While the announcement confirms the 2027 window, specifics remain sparse. Aniplex and French Bread have scheduled a deeper dive for August 2 at the Fate/Grand Order Fes event, where they'll unveil additional details about gameplay changes, the roster, and narrative direction. The game will feature Japanese audio and Spanish interface text.
For the fighting game community, this represents a meaningful commitment to the Melty Blood lineage. Type Lumina carved out a dedicated following despite launching during a crowded era for competitive fighters, and Twi-Lumina signals that Type-Moon and French Bread aren't content to let the series rest. A new story from Nasu—who rarely writes new material for existing properties—suggests this isn't merely a balance patch dressed up as a sequel.
The multi-platform approach also matters. Nintendo Switch 2 support indicates Aniplex is banking on that hardware's market penetration, while the simultaneous PlayStation, Xbox, and PC releases keep the player base fragmented across fewer ecosystems than some competitors manage.
More will emerge in August, but for now, Melty Blood: Twi-Lumina has staked its claim on early 2027. That's a long runway, but in fighting game terms, it's close enough to start paying attention.
