Marvel's New Manga Line Hits Different at NYCC
Marvel and Kadokawa announce original manga series at NYCC.
Marvel just announced a full slate of Asia Originals at New York Comic Con, and it's a legitimate shift in how the publisher is thinking about manga. The partnership with Kadokawa is bringing Japanese sensibilities and original storytelling directly into the Marvel universe — not just translations, but actual manga designed from the ground up with that DNA.
The initial wave hits hard: Deadpool, Iron Man, Spider-Gwen, Venom, and Spider-Man are all getting the manga treatment. Spider-Man: Shibuya Crossline will center an original character in Tokyo's Shibuya ward, which signals Marvel is serious about embedding these stories in actual Japanese settings and culture, not just slapping manga aesthetics onto existing narratives.
This move suggests Marvel sees manga as a primary creative space. Kadokawa's involvement matters — they're not a small player. This is a real infrastructure partnership, not a licensing afterthought.
The creative teams and release dates haven't been announced yet, so there's still a lot to learn about who's behind these adaptations and when fans will actually get their hands on them. But the announcement alone signals that Marvel is thinking seriously about how to build stories that work in manga as their own medium, not as ports of existing comics.
