Ghost of Tsushima Gets Anime Adaptation With Heavy-Hitter Writers
Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is getting an anime adaptation with a star-studded creative team.
The anime world just got its first real look at Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, and the creative roster behind it signals serious ambition. Character visuals have been revealed for the adaptation of the game's online multiplayer mode, pulling together a team that reads like a who's who of prestige anime production.
Noji Okazaki, the character designer behind the cult classic Afro Samurai, is handling the visual design. That's paired with scripting from Gen Urobuchi and Ken Maejima, both from Nitroplus—the studio behind some of anime's most narratively complex work. HAYATE is producing the series in cooperation with PlayStation Productions, with a 2027 release window locked in.
Adapting Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is an interesting choice for anime. Rather than following the single-player campaign of Sucker Punch's acclaimed samurai game, this anime draws from the game's online multiplayer mode—a shift that suggests the story will chart its own course rather than simply recreate the original narrative. That creative freedom, combined with the caliber of writers attached, hints at something more ambitious than a straightforward game-to-screen port.
The involvement of Urobuchi in particular carries weight. His track record includes Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero, both of which took familiar premises and twisted them into something unexpectedly complex and emotionally brutal. Pairing that sensibility with a samurai setting and Okazaki's distinctive visual style could yield something genuinely distinctive.
With 2027 still over a year away, details remain sparse—no premiere date, no plot synopsis, no footage. But the names attached already suggest this isn't a quick cash-in on the game's popularity. It's a calculated bet that Ghost of Tsushima's feudal Japanese setting and themes have enough depth to sustain a serious anime adaptation, especially when handled by creators with proven track records in elevating source material.
