Updated: Blade Runner 2099 Unveils Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer; Trailer unleashed!

Prime Video has shared the first official images from Blade Runner 2099, giving us our first real look at Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer in what's shaping up to be a thoughtful expansion of the Blade Runner universe. The series, set fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, finds Yeoh playing Olwen, a replicant who works as a Blade Runner, while Schafer takes on the role of Cora, her human partner.

What makes this pairing interesting is the inversion at the story's core. Rather than replicants existing as a persecuted underclass, Blade Runner 2099 imagines a future where replicants have become the dominant force in society, with humans relegated to second-class status. It's a premise that draws inspiration from Philip K. Dick's original novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, suggesting the series wants to dig into the philosophical questions that have always lived at the heart of this world.

The show is still in development, with Prime Video planning to premiere Blade Runner 2099 in 2027. That gives the team time to build something that honours both the visual and thematic legacy of Ridley Scott's original film and Denis Villeneuve's more recent 2049, while charting its own course through a world where the old certainties have been completely upended.
