Blade Reboot Reportedly Canceled

Marvel Studios has seemingly decided to abandon its long-anticipated Blade reboot, initially announced seven years ago. Mahershala Ali, however, is still set to portray the iconic vampire hunter in the upcoming film Midnight Sons.

While hopes for the Blade reboot lingered after a series of delays, the recent news indicates that the project has been removed from Marvel's slate for 2024. Initially, it was communicated that the movie was merely on hold, leading fans to believe it would progress eventually.

During an episode of The Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider revealed that the Blade reboot is now officially 'dead.' However, Ali's debut as the Daywalker is expected to happen in Midnight Sons.

Ali expressed his eagerness to step into the role during an interview at the premiere of Jurassic World Rebirth. “Call Marvel,” he urged, expressing his readiness, and added, “I would love for Blade to happen; we’ll see.”

Delays and Creative Changes

The latest drafts have involved numerous writers, with Eric Pearson being the sixth to contribute. Reports suggested that while the script finally pleased stakeholders, the project's delays stemmed from Marvel's focus on multiverse narratives in anticipation of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. This could indicate poor timing rather than creative struggles.

Rumors have also circulated that positive reactions to Wesley Snipes' return in Deadpool and Wolverine may have influenced Marvel’s current approach to Blade, reframing it as a multiverse storyline.

Assurance from Marvel

Kevin Feige has assured fans that Marvel is still dedicated to bringing Blade to life. He commented, “We are committed to Blade. We love the character. We love Mahershala’s take on him... whenever we change direction... we let the audience know.” Feige's statements suggest that while a standalone Blade film may be on pause, Ali's Blade will rise in Midnight Sons.

As developments unfold, fans remain hopeful for Ali's Blade to eventually lead to his solo title despite this setback.
