Aliens Survey Human Ruin in Salamander Pictures' Fantasia Debut
Aliens investigate Earth's collapse in Salamander Pictures' new anime short.
Ten thousand years in the future, three aliens land on Earth to investigate what went wrong. That's the premise of 20001 An Earth Odyssey, an anime short that will premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival on July 18, 2026.
The film, a collaboration between Salamander Pictures and Nippon Animation, takes its title literally—the story unfolds in the year 20,001, when human civilization has collapsed. Rather than tell the story from humanity's perspective, director Haruki Kasugamori centers the narrative on the extraterrestrial visitors attempting to make sense of our ruins.
The voice cast includes Yōji Ueda, Yū Kobayashi, and Eito Kawahara, with character designs by Kazuto Nakazawa. Taiki Sakurai conceived the original story and oversaw production.
The Fantasia International Film Festival, held annually in Montreal, has become a key venue for experimental and genre-forward animation. A premiere there signals ambition beyond the typical anime festival circuit—this is a film positioning itself for a broader, international audience.
